This
morning we dragged the iMac downstairs, loaded it in the car and headed
off to have coffee with friends before we went to the studio to try
to fix the computer problems. Before we left we decided to go ahead
and bid on a computer on that would work for us, because the iMac solution
was just going to be a Band-Aid.
Once we
got to the studio, we checked the auction and we won. So far, so good.
Everything was proceeding according to plan. If slowly.
The data
from the other hard drive was loaded into the iMac. Chuck started the
computer up, and it seemed OK. Then he shut it down and connected up
the printer and turned on the computer again, only...it didnt
start up. Panic time. But, then he unplugged the printer and tried it
again, and of course it worked again. That was the Oh, shit!
moment. The moment where the little light bulb went on and where it
became apparent that we just bought a computer we probably did not need.
To verify this the old hard drive was reinstalled in the broken
computer, and sure enough it started right up. The printer was plugged
in again and it didnt work.
Theres
really nothing to be done at this point. I suppose we will now have
a back up computer. I guess that's not a bad thing.
THE PROJECT
seemed to loom larger and larger today, probably because there was no
way to do it efficiently. There was a lot of just standing around marking
time while stuff printed and while I prepared all the rest of the stuff
to finish up. Practically every surface was and still is covered with
various sheets of paper in various states of completion, so it was hard
to do other projects, and I couldnt just use my own computer to
surf the net and waste time because of all the other computer fixing
that was going on.
In spite
of the frustration, Im sure we will finish it and we are both
pretty happy about it. It looks pretty good, even though Im not
totally thrilled with the cover. But, this time it is a learning experience
and next time, hopefully, we can plan ahead and have more time to obsess
and work out the problems well in advance.
Im
fried for the moment, though, so I am going to take some time off tomorrow
to get a change of scenery. My friend and I are going to a mall and
to IKEA. While there maybe Ill buy some of their cheap batteries...wonder
if they call them Runin?
Im
hoping this trip will serve to charge my batteries and get me up and
runin again.
